Polly Pocket is about to enter a different arena, more gigantic than its size. This entertainment icon is getting ready for the big screen as powerhouses Mattel and MGM plan to release a live-action film of a child favorite series, with Emily in Paris actress Lily Collins set to star as the title character of the film, as well as produce it.
For many years, Polly Pocket has captured the hearts of many children across the globe. It is a 30-year-old toy brand that grew prominence in the ’90s, changing the game of the toy arena with its colorful pocket-sized world. In 2018, Mattel reintroduced Polly Pocket to pay homage to the brand’s origins along with some minor tweaks to fit the new generation. Since its reintroduction, it has adapted to the times with the creation of an animated TV series and various Youtube content. “Polly Pocket is an iconic franchise that has resonated with children for more than three decades,” said Brenner, EP of Mattel Films.
From tangible playthings to characters in various animated films, this popular miniature brand is going to great lengths as Polly’s adventures transform into a live-action movie with Golden Globe Girls winner Lena Dunham as its writer and Lily Collins as the film’s leading actress and producer.
“Polly Pocket was responsible for countless hours of childhood escapism for me—Polly gave me a tiny world of magic and autonomy to narrate, so it’s pretty poetic to be tackling these same ideas now as a director collaborating with the brilliant Lily Collins, Robbie Brenner, Mattel, and MGM,” Lena Dunham said. “I’m so thrilled to bring to bear both my love of this historic property and also my deep-seated belief that young women need smart, playful films that speak to them without condescension,” she added.
In a separate statement, Lily Collins also expressed her excitement over the film, especially in interpreting Polly Pocket in “a fun, modern way.”
“I’m so excited to partner with this inspiring powerhouse of a team. Developing this project with Robbie, Lena, Mattel, and MGM to reintroduce Polly in a fun, modern way has been such a treat. As a child who was obsessed with Polly Pocket, this is a real dream come true, and I can’t wait to bring these tiny toys to the big screen,” Collins shared.
Earlier this year, Lily Collins recently received her second Golden Globe nomination in the Best Actress TV Series—Musical or Comedy category for Netflix’s Emily in Paris, which is currently filming its second season in France.
MGM’s Film Group chairman Michael De Luca and Film Group president Pamela Abdy are also thrilled about the launch of Polly Pocket’s live-action film. They said, “We look forward to working with our partners at Mattel Films to help bring Lena and Lily’s vision for a Polly Pocket movie to audiences the world over.”
Although there has not been news about its release date, it is safe to assume that there will be a live-action film of Polly Pocket in the future.
