Empowering Students with POM Safety Device Amid Escalating Safety Concerns
In the wake of escalating crime incidents both on and around the Howard University campus, the university community has united to address safety concerns. Howard University recently held its annual Bison Week Safety Fair on August 17, where students, faculty, and staff convened to explore safety measures and engage in live self-defense demonstrations. These efforts come in response to a significant altercation that occurred outside the residence halls the previous weekend, sparking discussions on enhancing campus safety.
One notable development that emerged from the Bison Week Safety Fair is the introduction of the POM device, short for “Peace of Mind.” This innovative safety gadget provides students with a powerful tool to call for assistance in potentially dangerous situations, both on and off campus. With a simple click of a button, the POM device can summon help, ensuring a swift response when needed most.
Notably, a faculty member from Howard University explained in a video shared on the institution’s social media platforms that the POM device features a three-click activation process that connects students to the campus police. This activation mode empowers students to instantly seek help if they find themselves in an urgent situation within the university premises. Furthermore, the device offers the capability to contact law enforcement officials in nearby areas, extending its safety benefits beyond the campus boundaries.
The university’s commitment to student safety is evident through its distribution of the POM devices, which were provided to students free of charge. In addition to this initial distribution, the POM devices will be conveniently accessible at the Blackburn Student Center every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the academic year, as reported by The Dig.
The significance of the POM device was highlighted during a student hall meeting and further emphasized by Howard University Police Chief Marcus Lyles during a student and parent town hall meeting held on August 18. The timing of this meeting was crucial, taking place just two days after a distressing incident where a group of D.C. juveniles carried out a violent attack in the Plaza Towers area, leaving several students injured and one student stabbed.
As part of the university’s comprehensive safety strategy, plans are in motion to bolster campus security through the installation of over 1,000 cameras across various locations. Additionally, card readers will be introduced to regulate access to facilities. In line with the institution’s layered safety approach, armed officers will be stationed at the Howard Plaza Towers to provide heightened security until further notice.
Amid these efforts, Howard University President Wayne A. I. Frederick addressed the ongoing commitment to campus safety in a letter dated August 19. Frederick acknowledged another incident near the Plaza Towers where rowdy juveniles engaged in disruptive behavior. While no physical harm was inflicted upon students during this incident, it underlines the need for continued vigilance.
The context surrounding Howard University’s safety initiatives takes place against the backdrop of a broader crime surge in the Washington, D.C. area. The Metropolitan Police Department’s Crime Data Sheet reveals alarming increases in homicides, motor vehicle thefts, and arson-related crimes in 2023. Homicides alone have risen by 30%, while arson and motor vehicle theft have seen staggering increases of 167% and 114% respectively.
In response to this concerning trend, Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the implementation of a citywide curfew beginning September 1 for individuals under the age of 17. This measure aims to curtail unsupervised outdoor activity during nighttime hours and contribute to community safety.
As the university community navigates these challenges, it is imperative to maintain a steadfast commitment to safety and well-being. By equipping students with innovative tools like the POM device and implementing comprehensive security measures, Howard University demonstrates its dedication to fostering a secure and conducive learning environment for its students.
