Surprisingly, Lightyear has not gotten enough buzz at the box office this weekend.
The new Disney Pixar movie, featuring the voice of Chris Evans as Buzz Lightyear, pulled an estimated $51 million at the North American box office this weekend.
The film’s domestic earnings went lower than expected – it was estimated the number would be approximately $70 million but ended up being about $85.6 million at the global box office instead.
The follow-up also did not snag the top spot at the box office, ranking at No. 2 during its opening following week 2 of Universal’s Jurassic World: Dominion, which gained an estimated $58.6 million.
Its opening is a second-rate release for Pixar, considered among Hollywood’s most successful and well-known studios. The studio has produced smash hits such as Toy Story, The Incredibles, and Finding Nemo and has earned $14.7 billion worldwide.

Lightyear was compared to other movies by Pixar because it is pushed on the hindquarters of film debuts for the animation studio. Its $51 million debut is behind 2017’s Cars 3, as per Comscore.
The movie was based on characters from the famed Toy Story series and received a 77% review score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, numerous other factors contributing to its sort of flop have added weight to its turnout.
Lightyear is the first movie Pixar has released in theaters since 2020. The animation studio’s last three movies – Soul, Luca, and Turning Red – all were launched by Disney.
However, Lightyear may still gain traction in the coming weeks because there are not many family fares at the box office right now. Universal and Illumination Entertainment’s Minion: The Rise of Gru – the next big family movie – doesn’t hit theaters until July 1.
