More Than Brunch: ‘Healing Through Purpose’ Redefines Mother’s Day as a Movement for Mental Wellness

Healing Through Purpose wasn’t simply a brunch—it was a potential breakthrough.

On Sunday, May 18, 2025, in the heart of Houston, over 50 women gathered for a deeply moving Mother’s Day experience hosted by Beyond the Celebration founder Brittney Davis. But unlike most springtime events, this one wasn’t built around baby bumps and flower crowns. Healing Through Purpose created space for the women whose motherhood stories began in silence: those who’ve faced infertility, miscarriage, or child loss—and who are still leading, loving, and showing up through it all.

Presented during Mental Health Awareness Month, the event offered a sacred space where invisible grief became visible, and collective healing took center stage.

Guests arrived at 1:30 PM to a warm pink carpet welcome, hosted by 713 News correspondent Darian Ellis, who spotlighted attendees and local leaders with heartfelt interviews. Inside, a floral-laced room buzzed with connection as mimosas flowed and soft music played. The event was curated by Berry Dynamic Agency, emceed by Houston changemaker Jonathan “Zoomania” Glover, and featured music by DJ Ervgotit, whose mission to empower underserved youth aligned with the day’s deeper purpose: finding meaning in pain.

Founder Brittney Davis opened the program by sharing her own story—one marked by miscarriage, near-death, and the aching quiet that followed. “I was decorating baby showers while silently grieving my own loss,” she said. “This is the event I wish had existed for me.” Her transparency set the tone for a space where vulnerability was met with validation.

What followed was a thought-provoking panel titled “Grief, Grace, and God’s Plan,” where Brittney was joined by a circle of women who channeled unimaginable loss into living legacies. Kimberly Guillory, founder of Silent Footprints, transformed the loss of her son into a nonprofit now supporting grieving families across Texas. Minister and ovarian cancer survivor Shemekia Preston reminded the room that “while we wait—we wait well.” Jackie Collins honored her late daughter, Meagan, by helping children of all abilities embrace their uniqueness, and Treveia Dennis, founder of Houston Random Acts of Kindness Day, shared how she found purpose after the tragic loss of her two sons and only brother. Their voices carried stories that were deeply personal yet deeply universal—stories of faith, resilience, and radical compassion.

The next panel, “Healing, Health & Wholeness,” focused on self-care and restoration. Certified Nutrition Specialist and podcast host Esosa Edosomwan spoke about reclaiming the body and spirit through intentional wellness. Leah Browne-Freeman, a licensed therapist and nurse practitioner, guided the audience through the emotional labor of grief and the importance of boundaries. Maketia Williams, a licensed counselor with lived experience of pregnancy loss, offered insight into healing without shame. “We often try to ‘move on’ when we really just need to move through,” Leah said—a sentiment that resonated softly, yet powerfully.

Throughout the program, tender moments served as emotional anchors. A “Letters to Our Angel Babies” tribute table gave guests space to put love into words. Gospel artist Shamone LaMarra delivered a stirring musical tribute that moved many to tears. State Representative Ron Reynolds and Harris County Treasurer Dr. Carla Wyatt offered certificates of recognition, highlighting the importance of making space for grief in both the community and policy. The afternoon culminated in a balloon reflection, where names, prayers, and messages to invisible children rose gently into the sky.

The event was made possible thanks to the generous support of community sponsors. Guests enjoyed southern-infused cuisine by Tasty Flavas, while custom desserts were provided by the talented mother-daughter team behind All Customz by Tee. Photobooth by Event Pros Houston captured all the memories. The vibe was set with Afterglow Lux candles. Jumbo big balloons from Partyfavour Events added a touch of fun. GG Marquee Houston’s beautiful bloom and live backdrop panel created a stunning scene. Printed signage was provided by JJHandmadeCreation. Every element—from the food to the floral design—was chosen with care, intention, and deep love for the community it served.

Healing Through Purpose provided a much-needed mirror to those who feel forgotten on Mother’s Day. It was a gathering where mental health was honored, grief was dignified, and every version of motherhood found belonging. As Brittney Davis reminded the audience in closing: “We may have different stories—but we all deserve to be seen, supported, and reminded that even in loss, we can still rise.”
