Andrea Leigh has built a career defined by transformation, authenticity, and an unwavering commitment to self-expression. As a well-known author of Do You Still Like Football, Leigh has captivated audiences with her deeply personal memoir, chronicling her journey of reinvention and self-discovery. But beyond the pages of her book, she has also emerged as a public speaker and fashion icon, embodying confidence and elegance in every aspect of her public presence.
A Courageous Reinvention
Leigh’s story is one of resilience and reinvention, a journey demanding vulnerability and strength. “The role of courage in my journey, especially in publicly reinventing myself, is something I approach with a deep sense of humility,” she reflects. While she is hesitant to compare her transformation to the sacrifices of military service members, she acknowledges that courage, in its simple form, is about pushing forward despite fear. “Reinventing oneself, especially in such a visible way, requires a kind of resilience and determination,” she explains. Step by step, even in the face of uncertainty, she remained committed to living authentically.
When asked what inspired her to write her book, Andrea shares that she was driven to break free from the typical stereotypes associated with transgender identity. “I was a very masculine man, comfortable in that identity, having achieved many outward markers of success,” she explains. “Yet, I was searching for something deeper. When I recognized that I desired to live fully as a woman—a very feminine woman, a fashionista who embraces the essence of femininity—I knew that my story could help others see that no one fits neatly into a box.”
Leigh’s transition was a personal reinvention and a display of unwavering resolve. She broke stereotypes by transitioning while remaining in a strong, 22-year marriage and receiving an incredible response from her parents. “Now is the right time to tell this story,” she adds. “Amid today’s complex political climate, where gender is often considered polarizing and divisive, I want to offer a different perspective. Many people simply want to understand, and I feel prepared to be open about my journey and help foster that understanding.”
Community and Connection
As Leigh became more public with her story, she found an overwhelmingly positive response from her professional and social circles. “My colleagues accepted me with understanding, and I often emphasize that acceptance doesn’t necessarily mean agreement. It’s simply a way to move forward and maintain meaningful relationships.” While her professional network shifted due to changes in her career, her personal life flourished. “My wife and I entertain more often now, and I genuinely enjoy connecting with others. This shift has enriched my life in a natural and fulfilling way.”
This new chapter in her life has brought an expanded sense of community. While some relationships faded, others deepened, and she became more engaged than ever. Socializing, once an afterthought, has become a source of joy and connection.
Redefining Success and Fulfillment
Leigh’s journey also led to a profound shift in how she defines success. “People are largely indifferent to us, and that’s liberating,” she shares. She believes much of life is spent worrying about external validation, but true fulfillment comes from within. “I now measure success by my impact on others, rather than traditional milestones like career accomplishments, sales, awards, promotions, or financial achievements.” This shift in perspective has given her a deeper appreciation for authenticity and meaningful connections over external accolades.
Inspiring Through Storytelling
With Do You Still Like Football, Leigh hopes to inspire those navigating their journeys of self-discovery. “Many of the experiences I share are very normal; I’ve simply chosen to put them in a memoir, something few people do,” she says. Her story challenges stereotypes and encourages readers to reconsider their identity, change, and self-fulfillment assumptions. “Trying to fit me into a ‘transgender box’ is almost impossible, and perhaps readers will come away with a broader understanding.”
Her memoir offers a personal perspective, encouraging readers to reflect on their lives and consider the possibility of change through small decisions or more significant shifts.
A Message of Love and Understanding
For families and loved ones of those going through transition, Leigh offers a message of reassurance and compassion. “Your concerns and difficulty in understanding are completely natural,” she acknowledges. “It can be hard for your loved one to articulate what they’re going through because they’re searching for a greater sense of alignment and coherence within themselves.” She encourages families to lead with love and believes open conversations can foster more profound understanding and connection.
Her perspective extends beyond personal relationships to broader societal attitudes. She argues that indifference, in the proper context, can be a positive force. “Indifference, in the way I describe it, is the freedom to allow others to live their lives without judgment or interference.” She sees this form of indifference as rooted in compassion, enabling people to coexist peacefully while embracing their differences.
Challenging Fear-Based Narratives
Leigh also explores common misunderstandings about transgender individuals, especially in politics. She critiques fear-driven rhetoric, such as opposition to transgender bathroom access, pointing out the impracticality of such arguments. “If a politician genuinely believes people should use restrooms according to their birth certificates, I’m certain they’d feel uncomfortable encountering me in the men’s restroom.” She believes that much of this discourse is designed to create division rather than solve actual concerns.
Living Authentically, Leading by Example
Andrea Leigh’s story is one of courage, transformation, and self-acceptance. Whether through her writing, fashion-forward presence, or advocacy for authenticity, she continues to challenge societal norms and redefine success on her own terms. Her journey serves as an inspiration not only for those facing personal transformations but for anyone striving to live with honesty, grace, and a sense of true fulfillment.
