In the rapidly evolving film industry, Calvin Wu, a highly regarded producer known for his exceptional expertise and extensive experience in both Chinese and American entertainment sectors, is planning to bring audiences the much-anticipated movie Kidnap the Panda. After delays due to the pandemic, this film is finally back on track with renowned director Tim Hills attached.
One of the few Chinese film producers to join the Producers Guild of America, Calvin Wu has made a significant mark on both sides of the Pacific. His dual expertise in the U.S. and Chinese markets has enabled him to bridge cultural and creative gaps, innovatively contributing to global storytelling. He has played critical roles in various successful projects, serving as executive producer for Youku’s mini-series platform Funtee and producer/head of production for China Lion Entertainment. He also co-produced the TV series The Way We Were in the U.S., co-executive produced the animated feature Extinct (Netflix), and was the executive producer for One True Loves, which features notable actors like Phillipa Soo and Simu Liu.
Kidnap the Panda, a live-action and CG-animated hybrid film, is slated to begin production in 2025 and be released globally in 2026. Its budget is estimated between $15 million and $20 million. Mr. Wu will oversee the entire project to ensure each stage progresses efficiently and smoothly.
Leveraging his deep industry network, Mr. Wu has brought Tim Hills on board as the director for the film. Tim Hills, a respected filmmaker known for Garfield and Alvin and the Chipmunks, as well as his work as a writer and producer on SpongeBob SquarePants, adds immense value to the project. With Hill’s extensive experience in blending CG and live-action techniques, his involvement enhances the film’s potential for success.
