Determination: Sierra Jean’s Unwavering Pursuit of Passion

Few individuals possess the resilience required to navigate life’s curveballs. Even fewer can pivot from childhood stardom to making situational detours while navigating the complexities of the broader music world. Yet, in a most inspiring story, Sierra Jean encompasses just that – an enduring spirit that refuses to be crippled by circumstances.

Born in Long Island, NY, in 2001, Sierra ascended to fame at an impressively young age. Discovered on YouTube at just eleven years old, she regularly journeyed to Los Angeles, elbowing her way among Hollywood veterans, continuously writing, recording demos, filming music videos, and pitching to major label executives. By the time she turned fourteen, she had become a seasoned professional with multiple releases and a fan base of over two hundred thousand followers across social media platforms in 2016.

Sadly, Sierra’s stardom took an unexpected pause in 2016. She fell ill and was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, a chronic condition causing dizziness and, in extreme cases, syncope. Struck by her sudden ailment, her primary concern was, “Will I ever be able to perform again?” However, even as she weathered through her diagnosis, using a wheelchair intermittently when her symptoms flared up, Sierra continuously defied the odds. She continued to strum her guitar for hours whenever she could, exemplifying an impactful illustration of passion outliving circumstances.

Sierra’s resilience in managing her health was not without reward. By the time she enrolled in Belmont University—recognized by Billboard as a Top Music Business School in the country—she was set and ready to record again. Transitioning from a child performer to an adult artist is an endeavor with its challenges, especially for someone like Sierra, who wrestled with expressing her true musical preferences. Choosing Belmont’s music business production program, she resolved to take more decisive control of her career.

Celebrating the tenth anniversary of her first single and intending to reestablish her brand in the music industry, Sierra re-recorded “all that I want.” She updated some lyrics and modified elements to flaunt her new Pop Rock sound, a style she had always yearned to project. As she puts it, “It is a nod to those that stuck by me and a welcome to those who are just learning who I am.” She recorded ‘all that I want’ in Nashville, TN, at the Grammy-nominated’ Welcome to 1979′ studio, alongside talented musicians she had met during her time at Belmont. The song, a breakup anthem, reflected her struggle with a past relationship where her ambitions were not supported.

Her musical journey began at an early age in Charlotte, where she moved at the age of eight. Sierra’s roots are entrenched in Rock, as she often delivered covers of classic hits by bands such as Journey and Bon Jovi. However, her lyrical influence is admittedly Jon Bellion, who was recently nominated for Album of The Year for producing and writing Jon Batiste’s album, World Music Radio. Bellion’s metaphorical lyricism is strong on Sierra, which is evident in her upcoming singles “This Far” and “Rose-colored glasses.”

After a seven-year hiatus, Sierra Jean is now healthier, more prepared, and excited to return to the spotlight. Emerging stronger from her challenges, she holds firm that everything happens for a reason. Backed by her industry education, she revisited her old contract from 2013, only to discover that due to ‘sneaky wording,’ she never owned her previous master recordings and couldn’t profit from them. Had she not been diagnosed with POTS, she might still be bound by that contract, hindering her livelihood. Nevertheless, Sierra Jean persistently refused to let anything compromise her dreams, embodying the true essence of determination.

Sierra Jean’s story underlines an inspiring journey marked with resilience, passion, and an unwavering pursuit of dreams against all indomitable odds. Surviving a world that constantly ill-favored her situation, she stands today as a beacon of perseverance for upcoming artists, sparking hope through her trials and triumphs.
