Los Angeles Judge Approves Change of Kanye West’s Name to “Ye”

44-year-old music artist and entrepreneur Kanye West has formally changed his name to Ye after a Los Angeles judge approved his request last Monday. Ye filed the petition in August 2021, citing personal reasons for the request. He has been using Ye as a long-time nickname among family and friends in the music industry, and it is also the inspiration behind his famous footwear Yeezy, which is now valued at $1.8 billion.

Born Kanye Omari West, Ye has been giving hints on using a different name since 2018. In the same year, he told radio host Big Boy, “I believe ‘Ye’ is the most commonly used word in the Bible. In the Bible, it means you. So, I’m you. And I’m us. It’s us. It went from being Kanye, which means the only one, to just Ye, just being a reflection of our good, our bad, our confusion—everything. It’s more of a reflection of who we are [as] beings.”

In the same year, he released his eighth album titled Ye. He has also been observed to be using the same handle on his official Twitter account. His ex-wife, popular socialite and TV personality Kim Kardashian, once revealed on Keeping Up with the Kardashians that they once considered naming their fourth child Ye. The former couple, however, did not proceed with that choice and instead opted for a Biblical name, Psalm.

Ye and Kim made headlines once again early this year when the latter filed for divorce after seven years of marriage. He was also criticized heavily on social media after announcing that he would run for president of America in 2020 and because of his friendly relationship with former President Donald Trump. At that time, Kim also requested for the public to give their family privacy as they dealt with Ye’s struggle with his bipolar disorder. It is believed that one of the several reasons that Kim filed for divorce was because of Ye’s unpredictable and uncontrollable behavior.

Just recently, Kim became the sole owner of the former couple’s Hidden Hills home after purchasing the property from her estranged husband for a whopping $23 million. The two purchased it for $20 million in 2014 after they got married. $20 million was paid solely for the property, while the remaining $3 million was paid for the house’s contents, including furniture and rare artworks.

Early on, Kim was open about wanting to keep their Hidden Hills home for the sake of her children, who grew up there. It was very important for Kim to make her children’s acceptance of the divorce as smooth as possible. This included keeping the house where they feel secure and comfortable. Ye is expected to release his new album titled Donda before 2021 ends. The release date of this special album has been pushed several times due to undisclosed reasons. The album is named after his late mother, Donda West, a college professor who passed away in 2007. It is still unclear if the rapper intends to change his name on all streaming platforms in time for the release of his upcoming album, as he still uses Kanye West on Spotify and Apple Music. More details about his new album are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
