Sharper’s Florist: Weaving Stories Through Strings and Synths

In the vast expanse of the indie music scene, a unique voice emerges from the bustling streets of Los Angeles, California. This voice belongs to Bradley David Sharper, the Filipino-American maestro behind the solo project known as Sharper’s Florist. With a guitar in hand and a story at heart, Sharper crafts melodies that transcend mere notes and rhythms; they are narratives steeped in the intimate emotions of everyday encounters, such as a fleeting gaze exchanged on the subway or a nervous conversation at a bar.

Born in White Plains, Maryland, Sharper’s journey into music was not one charted from infancy but rather born out of adversity. A middle school surgery led to three months encased in a body cast, limiting his mobility but not his spirit or creativity. It was during this period that he discovered an escape and an expression through the strings of a guitar, meticulously learning The Killers’ “Hot Fuzz” tracklist. As he navigated through his high school years, his musical tastes—ranging from John Mayer to Death Cab for Cutie—set him apart in an area predominantly echoing with country and southern rock tunes.

Sharper’s pursuit of music led him to New York City where he attended The American Musical and Dramatic Academy. The city’s vibrant energy and rich musical legacy served as both backdrop and muse for his songwriting. It was here that “Sonder,” Sharper’s debut EP emerged—a seven-track homage to New York City’s singer-songwriter tradition and Sharper’s own experiences within it.

However, it was upon moving to Los Angeles to complete his Fine Arts degree that Sharper’s Florist truly began to blossom. Playing guitar and singing for various local bands provided him with the soundscape inspiration needed for this indie pop/rock project.

The summer of 2018 marked the release of “Day to Day,” Sharper’s Florist’s debut single—an upbeat narrative set against an indie beach atmosphere recounting efforts to woo a crush. This track, alongside self-produced singles “The Vibe” and “In Your Company,” solidified Sharper’s status as an emerging indie artist on both local stages and online platforms.

2020’s global lockdowns became an unexpected catalyst for creativity; confined within his North Hollywood apartment, Sharper penned what would become “Cosmic Hiding Place,” a six-track exploration into themes of space, heartbreak, and solitude rendered through a lo-fi lens. This EP not only showcased Sharper’s ability to create immersive soundscapes but also expanded his musical narrative beyond momentary interactions into more introspective realms.

The release of “Cosmic Hiding Place” brought together drummer Andrew Crawford and bassist Philip Banks, adding new layers to live performances across Southern California. Their latest track “Caroline” continues this trajectory—melding 2010s alternative rock vibes with minimalist production while narrating tales of nocturnal romantic endeavors.

As we look toward the horizon, excitement builds around Sharper’s Florist preparing to record a new EP with producer John Gilbert later this fall—a collaboration promising further expansion into uncharted musical territories.

Sharper once remarked about his project saying it captures “the intimate emotions that arise from seemingly ordinary moments.” This philosophy underpins every chord struck and lyric penned by Sharper’s Florist—an endeavor not just about making music but about storytelling at its core.
