Vertige, the dynamic band founded by Parisian Naomi and guitarist Augustus, has been creating waves in the LA music scene with their unique blend of Blues, Rock, and powerful storytelling. Their journey is a mix of serendipity, musical influences, and the creative energy that defines their sound. From their humble beginnings to the upcoming release of new music, Vertige is a band to watch as they continue to captivate audiences with their electric performances and raw, emotive songwriting.
The Origins of Vertige: From Paris to LA
The story of Vertige began in 2022 when Naomi, a passionate singer and performer, set out to form a band to impress a guitarist she admired in Los Angeles. Her quest for a band member led her to an unexpected connection on a dating app with a fellow Parisian in LA. While romance didn’t blossom between them, this encounter introduced Naomi to Augustus, a guitarist who would soon become her collaborator and co-founder of Vertige.
Naomi, born and raised in Paris, grew up immersed in music, with her mother being a jazz performer. Naomi’s love for singing started at the tender age of two, and she honed her craft as she grew older. Her musical journey took her to New York City, where she sang in jazz clubs and attended the Stella Adler School to pursue acting. Eventually, she moved to LA, where the spark for Vertige would be ignited.
In an almost “manifestation” moment, Naomi booked a show in September 2022, even before having secured a full band. It was at Home Depot on Sunset Boulevard where she left her number on the windshield of a cool-looking guy, who later became the band’s drummer and bassist. Though he eventually moved on, this bandmate helped Naomi find Jeremy, a French drummer who would become an essential part of Vertige’s sound.
Augustus: A Guitarist Shaped by Blues
The other half of Vertige’s musical soul is Augustus, the band’s guitarist. Born in Lyon, France, Augustus grew up surrounded by a rich blend of musical influences, including Texas Blues and Rock n’ Roll. From a young age, he was captivated by the guitar, influenced by legendary musicians like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, and David Gilmour.
Augustus took a unique path to music. After earning a Bachelor’s in Physics at University College London, he was faced with a choice between continuing his academic career or pursuing his true passion—music. He chose the latter and moved to Los Angeles, where he would meet Naomi and join forces to create Vertige.
His guitar playing is defined by its exploration of Blues traditions while pushing boundaries and introducing new elements to the genre. Augustus’ dynamic guitar work is a central pillar of Vertige’s sound, providing the perfect complement to Naomi’s trance-like voice.
The Band’s Unique Sound: A Symbiosis of Voice and Guitar
Vertige’s sound is a product of the seamless interaction between Naomi’s powerful, energetic voice and Augustus’ masterful guitar playing. Together, they create a musical drama that draws listeners in and keeps them engaged. Naomi’s voice brings a trance-like quality, infusing the music with emotion, while Augustus’ guitar playing offers a dynamic exploration of Blues, Rock, and beyond.
The rhythm section, led by Jeremy on drums and Andreas on bass, provides a rock-solid foundation, allowing the duo to explore new musical territories. The band’s sound is not just a fusion of genres but a carefully crafted dialogue between the different elements, creating a unique musical experience that is both energetic and contemplative.
Songs with Personal Stories: Vertige’s Music and Lyrics
Vertige’s music is deeply personal, with lyrics that reflect the band members’ own experiences and emotions. Their upcoming album, which features songs like “The Heart,” “Michael’s Song,” and “Sarah,” is a reflection of the trials and relationships that have shaped the band. “The Heart” is a song about Naomi’s crush that sparked the formation of the band. “Michael’s Song” tells the story of a former bandmate who once played with Naomi, while “Sarah” is about Augustus’ ex-girlfriend, who also played a significant role in his life.
Perhaps the most intense track is “Another Gun Story,” a song inspired by Naomi’s past relationship with a man who once pulled a gun on her in the desert. These raw and honest songs showcase the vulnerability and strength that define Vertige’s music, offering listeners an emotional connection to the band’s journey.
Live Performances and Upcoming Releases
Vertige is no stranger to the stage, regularly performing in Los Angeles at venues like The Viper Room.
